Lafayette Library and Learning Center Breaks Ground for New Home

April 11, 2007, Lafayette, CA: After years of planning and fundraising and advocacy, the new Lafayette Library and Learning Center is breaking ground for its new home. The celebration is scheduled for April 20, 2007 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the site of the new facility at the corner of First Street and Golden Gate Way in Lafayette. The celebration aims to involve the Lafayette community in its new Library’s groundbreaking with a brief ceremony to introduce key players followed by food, music, and family fun. Lafayette residents and visitors are invited to join in on this special historic day.

The new Library is the largest civic project in the history of Lafayette. Says Anne Grodin, Chair of the Lafayette Community Foundation, the organization responsible for raising community support for the project, “Since the kick-off celebration last year, the new Library’s momentum has been amazing. The support of the Lafayette Redevelopment Agency, the State of California, Contra Costa County and nearly one-quarter of the households in Lafayette has made this project a reality.”

Lafayette’s Mayor, Carol Federighi, will be the Mistress of Ceremony and will introduce the new Library’s construction contractor, C. Overaa & Company, and the new Library’s architects, Wade Killefer and Barbara Flammang of Killefer Flammang Architects.

Speakers at the groundbreaking ceremony will include Mayor Carol Federighi, Supervisor Gayle Uilkema, County Library Anne Cain and Anne Grodin.

Mayor Federighi is delighted to celebrate the start of the Library’s construction. The Mayor noted, “What better way to involve the Lafayette community and its friends than to invite them to participate in this historic groundbreaking day for our new Lafayette Library and Learning Center.”

Mayor Federighi issued a special invitation to children to join the festivities. “This is a great opportunity for children to witness the official start of their new Library. There will be construction trucks and machinery and hardhats for the children who will be encouraged to explore the ‘big wheels’ of construction in a safe manner.” Light refreshments and music will be provided.
