been much speculation about the effects offshore oil drilling will have on our economy and our environment.
Will drilling off the U.S. coastline lower prices at the pump in the immediate future? What will the
environmental impact be? Join a panel of experts to discuss both the short-term and long-term advantages
and disadvantages of offshore oil drilling.

Sweet Thursday
Authors' Essays Celebrate New Stages of Life
On Thursday, November 13 at 7:30 pm, the Friends of the Lafayette Library invite you to an evening that
celebrates the entering of new stages of life. Whether you're about to turn 40 or your child is going
off to college, there are emotions and experiences involved in both that will make you laugh and maybe
cry.

Knowing Pains: Women on Love, Sex and Work in our 40s,
is an honest, humorous, thoughtful and diverse
collection of essays by real women who aren't afraid to tell their age and tell it like it is. Sex,
marriage, love, divorce, motherhood, single hood, vocation, obsession - nothing is off-limits.
Writin' on Empty: Parents Reveal the Upside, Downside, and Everything In Between When Children Leave the Nest,
is an indispensable and heartfelt collection of essays written by parents about the experience
of children leaving home. From relief to grief, the stories told in this collection are honest, sweet,
and ultimately, nothing short of love letters.
Both books will be available for sale. All net proceeds will be donated to breast cancer education,
research and access to care. Coffee and refreshments will be served. For more information, call
(925) 283-3872.

Discover Africa through the Stories of Peace Corps Volunteers
Monday, November 17
7pm at the Lafayette Library
Returning Peace Corps volunteers will share stories of life as a teacher, health worker, business
advisor, environmental educator or community development worker in Africa on Monday, November 17
at 7:00 pm at the Lafayette Library.
To many people, a large number of African countries remain a mystery. If a country has not experienced
a famine or a civil war, we may know very little about it. However, nearly 3000 Peace Corps Volunteers
are currently serving in 25 African countries, from Mauritania to Madagascar and Mali to Mozambique.
This program features returned Peace Corps Volunteers sharing stories of life as a teacher, health worker,
business advisor, environmental educator or community development worker in an African community. These
returned volunteers spent two years living in Africa and have a unique perspective on the culture and
traditions of the country in which they served.
Free. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Lafayette Library. For more information, please
call (925) 283-3872.
